Bird in Hand winery has been protected from mining following a decision from the South Australian Supreme Court.
Terramin first launched their proposal to re-open the historic underground goldmine at Woodside near several wineries about 15 years ago.
Mining Minister Tom Koustantonis vowed to protect the viticulture region and block mining in the area in February 2023, rejecting Terramin’s applications.
The Liberal Opposition criticised the Government’s decision at the time and again in August last year when Member for Hammond Adrian Pederick labelled the decision as “outrageous” in SA Parliament.
On Monday, the Supreme Court dismissed Terramin’s judicial review of the Government’s decision to reject the application and the government’s proclamation over the relevant area protecting it from future mining applications.
Member for Kavel Minister Dan Cregan has told ARN’s Adam and Jennie that he is glad to hear the local community finally has certainty.
“We have iconic wine and tourism businesses in a location that would involve underground blasting, and blasting through a fractured rock aquifer, and this is a water source that is particuarly valuable to the local community. There was also significant concerns in relation to dust, noise, truck movements and the impact on the local amenity overall and in such a close proximity to the Woodside township,” Minister Dan Cregan said to ARN’s Adam and Jennie this morning.
