Baiting is underway at six Adelaide Hills Council parks and reserves to help control wild populations of rabbits and hares.

The Rabbit Calicivirus Disease (RHDV) K5 is being released in Stirling, Lobethal, Aldgate and Bridgewater. The first feeds commenced last Thursday 13 February and the program is expected to be completed within nine days.

Council said the biological control method specifically targets rabbits and hares.

“It is considered a safe and effective way to manage rabbit populations in residential areas, as it does not pose a risk to humans, domestic pets such as dogs, or native wildlife, including possums, kangaroos, and birds,” according to Adelaide Hills Council.

It is advised pet rabbit owners vaccinate against the virus.
