Following a range of shark sightings locally on the Northern Fleurieu and a fatality off the Eyre Peninsula in January, Liberal Member Sam Telfer is calling for more investment to keep those entering the water safer.

There have been 11 confirmed sightings in the past fortnight at beaches in Aldinga, Moana and Sellicks Beach, prompting calls for an establishment of more warnings and signage at local beaches, as well as more accessibility to wearable technology which can deter sharks from coming closer.

Other parts of the plan include State Government funding for shark first aid kits and new alert apps for sightings and pre-emptive warnings.

Telfer says repeated sightings and lives lost should bring action and change.

“Events like this should draw attention from decision makers and not just talk. It’s time for action when it comes to what government can actually do to put in place measures to try and mitigate and minimise risk,” Telfer said.
