Finals Footy Wrap – 2nd September

The first week of finals in the River Murray, Great Southern and Division One of the Hills Footy League produced thrillers and blowouts, while the Country Division in the Hills has its first grand finalist locked in. Read all about the action here:

RIVER MURRAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE (full results here)

Imperial have won an elimination final for the ages in the River Murray Footy League yesterday, beating Jervois by 6 points in an extra time thriller to survive the first week of finals.

Brody Morrell kicked the only goal of extra time for Imperial to steer them home on a windy day in Jervois, with Luke Harrowfield, Jack Penfold and Nathan Daish all among the best. 

The qualifying final on Saturday was less competitive, with Mypolonga cruising to a 39-point win over Southern Mallee to book a matchup with the undefeated Coorong Cats next up.

HILLS FOOTBALL LEAGUE (Division One results here, Country Division here)

The Hills Division One defending champions are lined up again with perennial powerhouse Hahndorf, after Nairne-Bremer held off a strong challenge from Mount Lofty on Saturday to win by 7 points in the first qualifying final. 

The Rams held their nerve in a see-sawing affair, with captain Brock Knott named best on ground while Adam Skara kicked three goals.

Mount Barker yesterday smashed Uraidla Districts by 60 points in the elimination final, setting up a date with Mount Lofty next week in the semi-final.

In the Country Division, Gumeracha is back again in the grand final after beating Birdwood by 43 points, while Kersbrook’s season of promise came to an end, after they lost by 29 points in the semi-final to Kangarilla.

GREAT SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE (full results here)

Two-time defending champions McLaren Districts have tallied a big win first up in the Great Southern finals, smashing an inaccurate Encounter Bay to win by 58 points in Saturday’s qualifying final. 

Despite only having three more scoring shots, McLaren Districts breezed into a blockbuster matchup next weekend against Victor Harbor, winning 15.4 94 to 4.12 36.

Myponga/Sellicks also claimed their elimination final yesterday by dominating the second half, to beat Langhorne Creek by 57 points in an eeriely similar scoreline (94-37).
