A new measure designed to help tackle problem gambling is on its way to all gaming rooms in the state.

The Take a Break initiative was tested in 31 locations, which included the Pretoria Hotel in Mannum, with 19 people across SA choosing to use the resource within the one-month trial period.

The initiative provides gamblers the opportunity to anonymously bar themselves from venues, via a QR code, as a preventative measure.

According to Consumer and Business Affairs (CBS), most of the applicants were barring themselves for the first time, and 20% additionally asked to be referred to a Gambling Help Service.

It’s anticipated the measure will be rolled out across SA by the end of the year.

CBS Minister Andrea Michaels says the program was effective because it offered a different type of help.

“Far too often people at risk of gambling harm know they need help, but don’t know where to turn or may not be ready to talk about it,” Michaels said.

“This is particularly valuable at this time of year when we know that rates of gambling increase over the Christmas period with factors such as financial stress, family conflict and substance use potentially triggering people to gamble.”
