South Ward Councillor Peter Oliver has been announced as the next deputy mayor of the Alexandrina Council, following a secret ballot in their monthly meeting.
Oliver bested Lou Nicholson for the position, and will assume the title once the current deputy mayor Margaret Gardner’s term expires on November 30.
Oliver is currently a member of Council’s Audit and Risk Committee, the Chief Executive Officer Selection Panel, the Chief Executive Officer Performance Management Panel, the South Australian Wooden Boat Festival Committee and the Community Wellbeing Grant Assessment Panel.
The role is rotated on an annual basis, with the deputy mayor able to make decisions for the council if the Mayor is not present.
The position also comes with a $25,296 allowance.
In a statement, Mayor Keith Parkes said applauded Gardner for her time in the position.
“I thank Cr Gardner for her service over the past year. Margaret has been an approachable, reliable and hard-working deputy who has stepped in to represent Alexandrina at many events, conferences and meetings over the past year,” Parkes said.
“I welcome the opportunity to work with Cr Oliver in the ensuing 12 months.”
